Isla Magdalena - Los Pinguinos Natural Monument

Magellanic penguins

After another night on board the Terra Australis, we spent part of the morning of the 17th on Isla Magdalena in the Los Pinguinos Natural Monument. This island, located in the Strait of Magellan, is a spring breeding ground for the magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus). A roped-lined trail on the island leads to the lighthouse at a high point of land, and took us through the nesting grounds. Penguins were observed at close range, in the open, along the shore and in their nesting burrows. Hundreds of burrows and penguins were seen that day. Sea lions also frequent the island, however they were too distant for me to get a good picture. I was able to find some bones on the shore - further indication of their presence in the area.
